Immune support

Gentle Reader.

IMMUNE SUPPORT:  NUTRIFERON

I tried to make sense of developing breast cancer at age 34.  One thought was to blame too much use of antibiotics as a child, along with cold and flu suppressants.  No doctor has been willing to go there with me.  My approach to my own health these past 42 cancer free years has been to strengthen my immune system in every way possible.

To my great relief and delight, the man who discovered a key to the immune response, Interferon, developed an herbal compound that stimulates our own body’s ability to make interferon.  Shaklee has the exclusive right to market this herbal complex, Nutriferon.  Herbs provide immune support.

I wish everyone I care about and people I don’t even know yet would take this Nutriferon every day.  We would have a lot fewer sick days if they did.

What is Nutriferon? Scientific results

Individual ingredients in the immune boosting blend include

pumpkin seed (Cucurbita Moschata) extract, which has been reported to induce interferon in cell cultures. It also contains

Plantago seed (Plantago asiatica), which has polysaccharides thought to stimulate non-specific immunity.

Safflower flower (Carthamus tinctorius) polysaccharides have been shown experimentally to prompt macrophages to produce cytokines. And

Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) flower buds have been traditionally used to fight infections.

What does Nutriferon do?

Experimentally, it’s been reported to increase the activity of immune cells. For example, clinical studies demonstrate that this novel, patented botanical blend is effective at inducing the body’s natural production of interferon, a key conductor and activator of immune response processes. Nutriferon activates and increases the phagocytic activity of macrophages and may increase the activity of natural killer cells, immune system defenders that seek out and destroy invaders at the cellular immune response level.

Human Clinical Trials

1. Administration of a Botanical Blend in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C

High dose interferon is approved as a treatment for hepatitis C. The investigators in this study chose to look at [Nutriferon] for its potential natural interferon induction and the impact on patients with chronic hepatitis C.

The three month study conducted at Kanazawa University Hospital in Ishikawa, Japan, was an open-label trial of patients with chronic hepatitis C who ingested 1gm of the blend [Nutriferon] daily. Of the 35 patients that completed the study, there were improvements reported in malaise, abdominal bloating, nausea, and vomiting with no adverse changes in hematology or biochemical examination parameters. There was a statistically significant decrease in HCV-RNA virus levels in patients with high viral titers after 1 and 3 months administration of [Nutriferon] and no serious adverse events were observed with botanical blend administration.  The study findings suggest that [Nutriferon] has antiviral activity and may be both safe and useful for administration to patients with chronic hepatitis C, especially in those with high viral titers.

Think about what this implies!

2. Administration of a Patented Botanical Blend in Patients with Pollenosis [allergies like hay-fever]

Allergies such as hay fever are hyper-sensitivities in which immune responses to environmental antigens cause inflammation and damage to the body itself.

Three uncontrolled trials on 113 subjects with mild nasal allergy or hay fever were conducted between 1998 and 2000. In these trials, subjects who used the botanical blend reported specific improvements in subjective measurements such as sneezing, nasal discharge, teary eyes, and nasal blockage. 10 subjects with nasal allergy consuming 2 g daily of [Nutriferon] for 4 weeks showed a statistically significant increase in peripheral blood gamma interferon levels after 4 weeks when compared to the pre-treatment measurement.   Reduced allergy response!

3. Effect of Administration of a Botanical Blend in Menopausal Women

Biological factors including hormones and cytokines, as well as psychological factors determine menopausal symptoms. The negatives associated with hormone replacement therapy are driving the search for alternative therapies. Thirty-two post-menopausal women were given 2g daily of [Nutriferon] for 6 months to measure effects on the immune and endocrine systems. There was a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, significant decrease in facial skin surface blood flow, and a significant decrease in plasma TG and LDL-cholesterol after 3 months administration.  [Nutriferon] appears to have clinically improved menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women and may help to maintain or improve normal biological function and quality of life as measured by these indicators in postmenopausal women.  Think about this!!

4. Some Effects of [Nutriferon]

In a follow up to the previous study, there was a significant decrease in plasma FSH level, and a significant increase in plasma GM-CSF levels and after 6 months administration of the botanical blend in the 32 subjects. It is significant that [Nutriferon] reduced menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women. [Nutriferon] may have acted as an immunomodulator and an endocrine modulator.

5. Administration of [Nutriferon] on Physical and Mental Symptoms Accompanying Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS)

Forty-two women ages 20-35 years old with PMS symptoms took 800 mg daily of the blend for 3 months reported statistically significant improvements for abdominal cramps, low back pain, swollen breasts, acne, breast pain, constipation, nervousness, sleepiness, short temper, and reduction of concentration after one month.

So much for the scientific medical-babble.  What does this mean for you and me?

A couple of testimonies:

My son gets sick a lot and travels for his job. He is usually sick for 4 days.  He took 6 Nutriferon when he started to get sick, took 6 more when he woke up at 4 a.m. By 9 am at breakfast, he was shocked to feel well.

I’m allergic to pollen, dust, grass, weeds, trees, feathers, fur, certain scents, dogs, cats, and certain foods (citrus, fish, cashews or anything processed in a plant with tree nuts). I also have asthma. I suffered oozy itchy rashes on my hands so bad I could hardly bend my fingers and couldn’t work as a nail tech. For years I would break out all over my body every time the wind blew. I was always getting nosebleeds. I was constantly sick with bronchitis, and pretty much had no voice for 4-6 months out of the year. I tried over-the-counter, and every prescription med, inhalers, nose sprays, you name it. Zyrtec worked the best but made me absolutely crazy and I had to quit taking it. I was getting allergy shots for a while and they helped a lot, but the series were sporatic, due to red tape in the MediCal system, and a couple times I had analphylactic reactions to the shots.

I was a non-committed Shaklee user, but decided to give the Nutriferon a try. My God, what a difference! I doubled up on it the first few days, then took two a day regularly for a long time. I did go without it for about a week at one point, and that is where I really saw the difference because the symptoms came back! Other than that, I’ve been basically symptom free since I started taking the Nutriferon.

I have seven children, one with severe allergies who also takes Nutriferon. My oldest daughter who is in college, takes it every day and was the only one in school that didn’t get sick the whole year. The other kids take it when others around them are getting sick at school and work. Tara Colvin

How about that for immune support!?

Digestive enzymes

What factors create digestive challenges? Why do we need digestive enzymes?
What is EZ-Gest?
How does it work?
Why chose and why use EZ-Gest

What Is EZ-Gest?
EZ-Gest offers as-needed relief for the unwanted results of incomplete digestion of
foods. Unlike popular single-function digestive aids, EZ-Gest offers plant-based,
comprehensive digestive enzyme support*:
 Alleviates symptoms such as gas, bloating, and feelings of fullness*
 Includes targeted enzymes to help digest common “problem” foods, such as dairy
and gas-producing vegetables, including beans and broccoli*
 Supports complete digestion of the fat, protein, and carbohydrates in all foods,
with a concentrated, multi-enzyme formula that addresses all food groups*

Let’s look at Factors that Create Digestive Challenges
1. Getting older. Some research suggests that older individuals may not be able to
handle the digestion of high fat foods as well as when they were younger. These
age-related changes in gastro intestinal function are complex, but may involve a
mild decline in production of lipase ― the fat-digesting enzyme ― by the
pancreas. Intestinal lactase activity also appears to decrease with advancing age.
This can lead to increased symptoms of lactose malabsorption and avoidance of
calcium-rich dairy foods, particularly in those who already have some degree of
lactose intolerance.
2. Over-eating. Heavy, fat-laden meals can take longer to digest. The digestion
often associated with greasy foods may also be partly explained by the production
of gases when fatty acids and stomach acid are neutralized in the small intestine.
If trapped, this gas may contribute to bloating and discomfort.
3. Typical “Western” dietary patterns. It is estimated that with a typical American
diet, a certain amount of protein escapes digestion. In the colon, undigested
protein is acted upon by bacteria, producing metabolic by products that can create
an unfavorable environment for the cells that line the colon.
4. Poor mealtime habits. Digestion can suffer when people continually eat on the
go and in a rush. When food is not chewed well, salivation may be inadequate
and food grinding may be incomplete. As a result, carbohydrate digestion may
not get the jump-start it needs before reaching the stomach. Some people suffer
from chronic or repeated belching due to swallowed air. A mild degree is normal,
but swallowing too much air while eating or drinking can lead to bloating or
excessive belching. Often this happens due to eating too rapidly or while under
stress. Some of the air swallowed may pass through the stomach; it is estimated
that this may contribute 20–60% of intestinal gases. Star Achievers Team, LLC © 2013, Not for sale, can be shared Page 2 of 2

How Does EZ-Gest Work?
Digestive enzymes manufactured in the body play key roles in breaking down the
complex molecules of food during digestion. Different enzymes work at different sites in
the gastrointestinal tract and under different conditions. For example, gastric pepsin does
its job in the low, acidic pH of the stomach, while pancreatic enzymes such as amylase,
proteases, and lipase work in the higher, more alkaline environment of the small
intestine.

EZ-Gest enzymes are “acid resistant” and have the capacity to function within a range of
pH that is compatible with that of the stomach during digestion. When taken along with
problem foods such as dairy or beans, EZ-Gest enzymes are in the right place at the
right time to assist with breaking down the complex molecules of these foods.* The
plant-based enzymes in EZ-Gest are derived through natural fermentation, and support
digestion of all food groups:*

Why Choose EZ-Gest?
 Complete formula of enzymes known to support digestion of all food groups.*
 Plant-based formula.
 Enzymes in EZ-Gest are acid-resistant, and survive stomach acid without
synthetic enteric coatings.
 Scientifically backed formulation containing enzymes clinically proven to work.
 No artificial colors or flavors.
 No synthetic preservatives.

How Should EZ-Gest Be Used?
EZ-Gest is recommended for use with meals that may cause digestive discomfort, such
as heavy meals, or meals containing problem foods. Take one capsule of EZ-Gest as a
digestive aid.*

Consumers who are specifically concerned with lactose intolerance or gas-producing
vegetables may wish to take EZ-Gest at the start of a meal. If pregnant, nursing, or
galactosemic, ask a healthcare professional. If rare sensitivity to fungal sourced
ingredients occurs, discontinue use.

Vitamins are no damn good. Is it true?

Gentle Reader,

Even on the beach in Nuevo Vallarta, news filtered down that, once again, some gurus warn us that vitamins are no damn good.  How does that news make you feel?  Like a fool for spending all that money on worthless pills?  Here you have been trying to avoid the chronic diseases of life-style so many Americans develop in their late 50s and 60s, and you are told that multi you have been taking will not do the job.  My vitamins should protect me from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or else.  Is it true?  Absolutely.  Otherwise why would I be taking all these pills?

Dr. Jamie McManus, medical director at Shaklee, asks us to take the 30,000 mile high view.  Vitamins are meant to supplement a diet that does not provide optimal nutrition.  They are not intended to substitute for a healthy diet rich in vegetables, lean protein and fresh fruit. Ninety-seven percent of us do not get adequate nutrition every day.  Vitamin supplements help bridge that gap.

So what do these three studies in the Annals of Internal Medicine say about preventing chronic disease?

Perhaps we should be begin by questioning the premise of the studies: that multivitamins can prevent chronic disease.  Do you believe you take your vitamins for that express purpose and leave everything else to chance?

Dr. McManus says “Prevention of any disease is a multi-factorial process that has to include diet, weight management, and lifestyle. To expect to see disease prevention accomplished by virtue of taking a daily multivitamin is a flawed premise. So, why are these large-scale (and very expensive) studies undertaken? It is simply the model of research that scientists and physicians understand – studying a single drug to determine what effect it may have on a single disease. Studying nutrition is far more complex.

These studies were conducted the way scientists study specific drugs.  Let us question that approach.

While a drug has a primary effect (usually something positive), they also have a myriad of side effects (which are usually negative and even life threatening). Every year pharmaceuticals are removed from the market because of these serious side effects. A study published in JAMA in 1998 showed that as many as 125,000 Americans die each year of properly prescribed pharmaceuticals – wow! When was the last time a vitamin was removed from the market?

Have you ever played around with stopping your vitamin intake for a week or so and then going back to them?  Could you tell the difference in how you felt with and without the supplementary nutrition?

Vitamins and minerals all have multiple positive functional roles to play in our bodies – which is why so many Americans pop a multi each day. People simply feel better when they take a multi because they are filling in those all too common nutrition gaps.

All three of these studies showed that multivitamins have an excellent safety profile. Well, of course they do! The only “potential harm” that continues to be mentioned every time we have a study such as this published is the slight increased risk of lung cancer in smokers who took beta carotene. My response to that is – smokers: stop smoking!

Let me quickly summarize these studies. The largest one is another report from the Physician Health Study – previous publications of data from this large government funded study did show an association of reduced cancer associated with multivitamin usage.

The next study looked at cognitive decline in physicians – who are at the upper end of the intelligence scale and pretty well nourished. Showing a significant change in cognitive decline in this population is going to take some intervention beyond a multi – as this population is most likely doing lots of the right things to protect their brain function.

In other words, the presence or absence of a multivitamin can not be the deciding factor in declining brain function.

The third study tried to show that higher doses of specific vitamins decrease the likelihood of a second heart attack in folks who have already had a heart attack. Hmmm. Maybe we should look at weight reduction, cholesterol, blood pressure lowering, and blood sugar management as opposed to putting the burden of prevention of a second heart attack in someone with heart disease on vitamins!

I have been recommending a multivitamin (and beyond) to my patients, and consumers in general, for my entire 30 years as a physician – and nothing in these studies changes my mind. The statistics on inadequacies in our American diet are clear – most everyone is deficient in multiple nutrients. Here at Shaklee, we have the Landmark Study, published in the journal Nutrition in 2007 that showed a nice correlation of better health with multiple supplement usage, starting with a multivitamin. We have over 100 published studies that validate the connection of nutrition and health. I urge you to continue taking your Shaklee supplements – but also, to remember the importance of eating healthfully, avoiding fast foods, and getting to a healthy weight on your journey to better health.  Dr Jamie McManus.

I couldn’t agree more.  The turnaround to Vitamins are no damn good could be vitamins are good.  Another could be my vitamins are not supposed to prevent cancer, heart disease or diabetes.  I prevent these diseases as best I can through my life-style choices.  My vitamins help.  I may develop these diseases anyway, no matter what I do to avoid them.  What is more true for you?

I wish you good health and happy consumption of the healthiest diet you can muster in any given day, supplemented by the vitamins that fill in the gaps.  I wish you success in finding your healthy weight, your top level of fitness, your most peaceful spiritual happiness, satisfying work and family relations.  If you have questions about a supplement and diet program to help you achieve these prevention goals, I’d be honored to help.  The New Year is upon us.  A good time to begin.

Be well, Do well and Keep Moving.

Insulin resistance & blood sugar levels

Use of Dietary Supplements for Blood Sugar Regulation

Prevalence of Pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes

Approximately 17 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, or 5.6% of the population, according to the US Dept. of Health & Human Services. Another 16 million are estimated to be pre-diabetic with impaired glucose tolerance. One of every 3 to 4 individuals (70 million), are likely to be insulin resistant and have increased risk to develop pre-diabetes, Syndrome X, or type 2 diabetes. Genetic predisposition is likely to be 50 percent responsible for insulin resistance, and lifestyle habits are likely to account for the other half.

Definition and Diagnosis of Pre-diabetes

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has formally defined pre-diabetes as having either impaired fasting glucose (IFG) concentration between 110 and 126 mg/dL, or, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) with a fasting glucose less than 126 mg/dL and plasma glucose concentration between 140  and 200 mg/dL120 minutes after intake of 75 grams of oral glucose. The utility of the diagnosis of pre-diabetes is to initiate weight loss programs in overweight individuals, encourage increased physical activity in sedentary individuals, and to identify and treat the other coronary heart disease risk factors of dyslipidemia and hypertension which are increased in prevalence in these individuals. Each year, approximately 5% of all  individuals within the pre-diabetic group progress into developing type 2 diabetes. The vast majority of pre-diabetic individuals, even if they don’t develop type 2 diabetes, have manifestations of Syndrome X and increased risk of heart attack. According to a recent survey of physicians commissioned and reported by the ADA, “…of the more than

17 million people living with diabetes, 65 percent will die from a heart attack or stroke.”

Lifestyle Modifications

Many scientists believe that calorie restriction, a healthy diet and weight loss combined with increased physical activity would be an effective means — possibly even more effective than drugs like metformin — to reduce the incidence of diabetes in those that are pre-diabetic, and there is definitive evidence to support that idea. Studies show that dietary changes alone can somewhat reduce risk of type 2 diabetes. Some studies have also shown that moderate alcohol intake among those who drink alcohol may decrease risk. Smoking worsens pre-diabetes, Syndrome X, and type 2 diabetes, as can certain prescription drugs for hypertension, which increase LDL  cholesterol and triglyceride levels while lowering HDL cholesterol.

Use of Individual Supplements

CHROMIUM

Description. Chromium is essential for normal binding of insulin to cell receptors and receptor activity. When insulin receptors are activated, a complex signaling system and set of reactions begin that result in the transport of glucose from plasma into cells.

Actions and Pharmacology. Chromium’s mechanism of action is not fully understood. However, chromium may activate insulin receptor kinase activity and inhibit insulin receptor tyrosine phosphatase, leading to increased phosphorylation of the receptor and increased insulin sensitivity. Clinical studies have suggested that chromium improves glucose tolerance. Chromium may also have anti-atherogenic effects through glucose regulatory mechanisms.

Usage and Dosage. From 200–1000 mcg daily. Chromium has been used safely in amounts up to 1000 mcg daily.

Research Summary. Since the mid- 1960’s, more than 30 studies have reported beneficial effects of supplemental chromium in people ingesting normal diets. However, not all studies conducted showed benefit.

The response to chromium supplementation for glucose, insulin, and lipids is related to the amount and form of supplementation, duration, and degree of glucose tolerance in subjects. Recent studies using chromium supplementation ranging from 200-1000  mcg report improved glucose and insulin parameters in type 2 diabetics, and improved insulin sensitivity in healthy obese subjects with a family history of type 2 diabetes and overweight, exercising young women.

Contraindications,  Precautions,  Adverse Reactions. Generally, chromium supplementation is well tolerated. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should limit their intake to the recommended safe dose of 50-200 mcg per day, unless monitored by their physician. Those with type 2 diabetes mellitus should consult their physician so that their blood glucose levels can be appropriately monitored and medications adjusted, should their insulin resistance decrease.

Interactions: Drugs. Beta-blockers taken in conjunction with chromium may increase HDL-cholesterol levels.

VANADIUM

Description. Vanadium is a trace mineral that may be life-essential.

Actions and Pharmacology. Research suggests that vanadium is essential to normal insulin function. Evidence is accumulating, showing that vanadium mimics insulin action in isolated cell systems.

Usage and Dosage. Range of 10 mcg to 1800 mcg. is considered safe. However, clinical studies with vanadium compounds have shown benefits in increasing insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetics at a dosage of 100 milligrams vanadyl sulfate (31 mg elemental vanadium) daily for up to 4 weeks.

Research Summary. Studies demonstrate that vanadium significantly mimics insulin action and lowers plasma glucose at pharmacological doses in animals and humans with diabetes.

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. No known contraindications at physiologic doses.

Adverse reactions of diarrhea, green tongues, nausea, vomiting, and cramps are reported at dosage levels of 4.5 to 22.5 mg per day.

Ferrous ion, chloride, EDTA, chromium, and aluminum hydroxide may impair absorption of vanadium.

MAGNESIUM

Description. Magnesium is an essential mineral affecting more than 300 metabolic functions and every biological process.

Actions and Pharmacology. Magnesium may have profound glucose-regulatory activity. The mechanism is unclear, but may affect insulin receptor binding or signal transduction.

Usage and Dosage. Studies show an inverse relationship between amounts of magnesium ingested and uptake, with lower amounts showing more efficacious absorption. Doses varied between 7 to 1,000 mg.

Research Summary. Supplemental magnesium has been shown to improve insulin response and glucose handling in the elderly and in type 2 diabetics. Several large scale, prospective studies have associated low serum magnesium with greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, or have found that non-diabetics consuming the highest amount of magnesium can lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by about one-third, compared to those consuming the least magnesium.

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. Ensure adequate levels. Contraindicated in people with heart block or renal failure. Amounts over 350 mg. may cause loose stool in some sensitive individuals.

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID

Description. Alpha-lipoic acid is a compound involved in energy production, and is a powerful antioxidant.

Actions and Pharmacology. Alpha-lipoic acid is synthesized in the body, where it acts as an antioxidant with free radical scavenging activity, and is involved in the regeneration of antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, and glutathione. It may stimulate glucose  transport.

Usage and Dosage. For treating diabetic neuropathy: 600-1200 mg daily. In Europe it  is available for diabetic neuropathy in 300 mg doses, divided into 150 mg doses twice daily.

Research Summary. Experimental studies in cell culture and animal models of diabetes suggest that alpha-lipoic acid may stimulate glucose transport. Safety of large oral and intravenous doses has been demonstrated in clinical trials showing benefit in subjects with diabetic neuropathy. In studies of type 2 diabetics, large oral doses have been shown to improve insulin resistance or glucose effectiveness after 4 weeks of treatment.

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should avoid alpha-lipoic acid supplements at pharmacologic doses. In general, it is well tolerated.

TAURINE

Description. Taurine is a non-protein amino acid manufactured in the body. Dietary intake averages 40–300 mg daily.

Actions and Pharmacology. Taurine plays a role in detoxification, platelet function, central nervous system development, and acts as a membrane stabilizing antioxidant.

Usage and Dosage. Normal dosages range from 500 to 1000 mg.

Research Summary. Experiments have shown taurine to improve insulin sensitivity  in animal models of insulin resistance and spontaneous type 2 diabetes. Some researchers have proposed that taurine supports glucose transport by its effects on membranes. Decreased nerve conduction velocity in diabetics is correlated with taurine depletion, and studies have shown that  taurine supplementation prevents diabetic neuropathy and counters oxidative stress in animal models.

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. No adverse reactions. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult their physicians before taking taurine.

ZINC

Description. Zinc is a mineral that plays a clear role in normal production, storage and secretion of insulin. It is necessary for the conformational integrity of insulin.

Actions and Pharmacology. Zinc is vital for numerous immune and metabolic functions, but it’s role and influence is not fully understood. It is known to have antioxidant activity.

Usage and Dosage. Deficiencies in zinc can lead to adverse health effects. Typical supplemental dose: 15 mg daily.

Research Summary. Studies have found that increased urinary loss of zinc is common in diabetes. Evidence also suggests that elevated glucose may induce higher intracellular levels of zinc-requiring antioxidant enzymes, and that zinc and chromium supplementation can significantly reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress in type 2 diabetics

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. Doses up to 30  mg daily are well tolerated. Significantly higher doses may cause nausea, vomiting, headache, and sleepiness. A typical dose for pregnant women and nursing mothers is 15  mg daily.

BANABA/COLOSOLIC ACID

Description. Colosolic acid is a triterpene compound derived from the Lagerstroemia speciosa plant, also known as banaba, from Southeast Asia. Used as a remedy for obesity and diabetes.

Actions and Pharmacology. Banaba extract has been reported to stimulate glucose transport, although how it exerts this action within the cellular insulin-signaling cascade is not known.

Usage and Dosage. Banaba may decrease blood glucose in type 2 diabetics. Studies have not established a recommended dosage.

Take only with meals.

Research Summary. Most evidence of banaba’s efficacy comes from safe, historical use by indigenous populations in Asia.

Experimental studies have shown that colosolic acid and other components of banaba extract stimulate glucose transport activity in cultured cells. Other small placebo controlled studies have shown modest hypoglycemic effects in type 2 diabetics, and improved glucose and insulin response.

Contraindications,Precautions,   Adverse Reactions,Interactions. No adverse reactions reported. Due to potential additive effects when taken in combination with insulin or drugs to manage type 2 diabetes, blood glucose levels should be monitored. Fasting or reactive hypoglycemics, type 1 diabetics, children, pregnant women and nursing  mothers should not take banaba.

Susan Knott and Son Riley Knott Story

Susan Knott and her son, Riley, suffered from allergies for many years. Their symptoms were most severe during spring and fall allergy seasons, but as time went on, they needed to be on the medications all year long.
Riley’s symptoms were the most severe with constant sinus congestion, red itchy swollen eyes and nose, feeling miserable. Even after 2 ½ years of allergy shots, he still required Zyrtec and Nasonex nasal spray. They helped diminish some symptoms so they were manageable, but he never felt allergy-free.
Susan was introduced to the Shaklee products that help strengthen the immune system 3 years ago in late January. She and Riley, 16 years old, began with:

Optiflora Probiotic Capsule (because 70% of the immune system is in the gut)
Vita Lea Multi
Vita C Sustained Release — 2 to 4/ day
Nutriferon (4 herbal extracts that help the body produce a key component of the immune system (interferon) naturally — 2 to 4/ day

Within 6 to 8 weeks, Susan was so much improved that she was able to stop her allergy medication completely…
Riley, whose condition was more severe, took 3 to 4 months before symptoms subsided and he was able to eliminate the medications. Both Susan and Riley were able to reduce the number of supplement tablets as their healthy immune systems got stronger. Today during allergy season, if symptoms return, Susan and Riley simply increase their vitamin levels and add Shaklee Premium Garlic and Alfalfa.

Optiflora prebiotic and probiotic supplements

Optiflora prebiotic and probiotic supplements

The healthy body contains trillions of “friendly” microorganisms. The vast majority of
them live in the colon, where they perform a multitude of health-supporting tasks. Their
most important role is helping to maintain a healthy balance with other less desirable
organisms. Enhancing the friendly microorganisms can promote long-term colon health.
Optiflora Probiotic promotes colon health by supporting the growth of healthy micro flora
naturally found in the colon.* Optiflora Probiotic delivers guaranteed live probiotics
Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus. The Optiflora Prebiotic Complex
enriched with Inulin and FOS (fructooligosaccharides), Optiflora Prebiotic Complex
delivers important nutrients that healthy intestinal bacteria need to grow and thrive.
Optiflora also has gamma-tocopherol, a nutrient associated with colon health.*

Who Might Benefit from Optiflora?
Who could benefit from beneficial intestinal microflora?
• People whose dietary choices may affect the balance of gastro intestinal micro flora.
• Individuals who frequently or chronically take antibiotics.
• Children who frequently take antibiotics for ear infections.
• Anyone planning foreign travel.

Optiflora Probiotic Complex features triple layer encapsulation technology, which helps
ensure potency and guarantees live delivery of Bifidobacterium longum and
Lactobacillus acidophilus to the intestine. Without this special protection, probiotics –
live organisms — can be destroyed before they reach the large intestine, where they
provide the greatest benefit.

It has been estimated that we have more bacteria in our intestinal tract than cells in our
body. One of the most important ways that beneficial microflora promote health is by
simply existing in large numbers. Research studies indicate that normal, healthy
colonies of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium can help maintain a healthy balance
between beneficial and undesirable bacteria. Scientists believe this healthful standoff is
achieved in several ways by:
• enhancing immunity
• maintaining the acid pH of the intestinal environment
• competition for nutrients and adhesion sites
• actively support healthy colony cells
• detoxification
• maintain healthy, normal populations of beneficial microflora, even in people
taking antibiotics

Optiflora is a unique, two-product system that supplies both beneficial bacteria
(probiotics) AND the nutrients they need to thrive (prebiotics) to provide complete dietary
support for the healthy balance of intestinal microflora.* Optiflora’s state-of-the-art
seamless capsule is guaranteed to withstand the acidic environment of the stomach to
deliver live beneficial bacteria to the intestine.

What are Prebiotics? They are nutrients which selectively feed the friendly bacteria and
Probiotics are supplemental populations of the “friendly bacteria” residing in the colon
which help to maintain healthy intestinal microbial balance. The term Probiotic literally
means “healthful for life.”

Remember only Shaklee Optiflora can guarantee delivery of both prebiotics and
probiotics encouraging growth and multiplication.

**Optiflora rebuilds health possibly quicker than any other product we have to offer! Just
what does this product do?? Basically, it helps maintain one’s health by adding
500,000,000 living flora to the intestinal tract with each serving! Since both advanced
aging and disease are directly tied to the intestinal tract, this product should be one of
the first following the Rx for a Healthier Life™!

At birth each of us are born with a healthy intestine loaded with positive and healthy flora
(bacteria) and we are probably as healthy as we ever will be! As we mature, and we are
exposed to the environment, to stress, to others’ ailments, through the process of aging –
all of these – cause disease-causing bacteria to invade our intestines! Slowly, the bad
bacteria overcomes the good flora! Before this product was introduced, there was NO
WAY to add new and living flora to the intestines! Now, because of Shaklee’s research
team, we can! Yes, Optiflora is the ONLY product on the market that delivers living flora
directly to the intestines! It’s powder and a pearl and it is recommended that it be taken
(together) once a day! Since nearly every illness comes from the colon (intestines),
Optiflora is possibly the ‘most effective’ preventative health product available!
Keep your digestive system on track. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body depends

Vitamin C Sustained Release

This is the time of the year, our bodies experience stress due to the change of seasons.
So to keep us at the top of our game we are focusing on Vita C. It is also called
ascorbic acid, which is the form of vitamin C found in most foods. It is a water-soluble
vitamin and cannot be stored in the body. Most plants and animals can produce their
own vitamin C, but humans cannot. For this reason, humans must eat ample amounts of
vitamin C every day.
Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that helps boost the body’s immune system, a
formula that helps maintain natural antioxidant defenses, cell integrity, and the health of
eyes, teeth, gums, bones, muscles, and blood vessels.

You may want to consider adding additional Vitamin C to your diet, if you find yourself
with any of the following:
 Bruise easily
 Bleeding gums
 A smoker
 Take medication
 Stressed?
 And the list goes on

If you experience any of these situations you will want to consider adjusting your vitamin
C intake.

Vitamin C is needed for proper growth, development, and to heal wounds. It is used to
make the collagen tissue for healthy teeth, gums, blood vessels and bones. Since
vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, it is also used to prevent damage to our bodies from
toxicities and pollutants, such as cigarette smoke.

Vitamin C helps protect other nutrients such as A, E and several B vitamins from
oxidation. It also regulates our body’s thermostat, cooling and heating the body through
circulation while promoting circulation through capillaries to fingertips and toes, and think
about it, when you are stressed circulation slows down and you will find that your
fingertips and toes are generally cold. Keep in mind that vitamin C is water soluble so it
needs to be taken throughout the day.

How much Vitamin C do I need in my diet?

Dr. Linus Pauling did extensive research on vitamin C and he states that just to maintain
normal body functions you need 3000 milligrams a day.
Smokers should add an extra 35mg per day to these numbers, because vitamin C is
depleted as an antioxidant in smokers. Additional vitamin C is needed to ensure it’s
other roles are performed.

Shaklee Sustained Release Vita-C®
is a propriety sustained release system that delivers the vitamin C equivalent of eating oneand a half oranges every hour on the hour for five hours. Unlike other sustained released products, Shaklee sustained Vita-C is based on natural gums and waxes, again like other C’s which are mainly ascorbic acid Shaklee Vita-C offers a full biolfavonoid complex.

Remember this……..don’t count on getting your vitamin C from orange juice. Vitamin C is
not stable in liquid and will oxidize after two hours being in liquid.

Avoid Vitamin C Deficiencies: The late Linus Pauling, PhD, found that vitamin C
deficiencies and heart disease often go hand in hand. If you are at risk for developing
heart disease, gradually build up to a daily intake of 3,000 to 6,000 mg, divided into two
or three doses.

Another reason to take Vitamin C: Your brain contains 15 times more vitamin C than
other organs in your body, and it’s vital for memory and mental function. Supplement
with a minimum of 1,000 mg of vitamin C every day.

Do you bruise easily, have bleeding gums, are you a smoker, take medication, are you
stressed? And the list goes on. If you experience any of these situations you will want
to consider adjusting your vitamin C intake.

Vitamin C is needed for proper growth, development, and to heal wounds. It is used to
make the collagen tissue for healthy eyes, teeth, gums, muscles, blood vessels and
bones. Since vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, it is also used to prevent damage to
our bodies from toxicities and pollutants, such as cigarette smoke.

Managing Pain

Gentle Reader
Are you like me, suffering from chronic pain?  Do you wake up every morning and check to see which joints are hurting?  A friend of mine describes sitting on the edge of the bed wondering if she can actually stand and walk to the bathroom.  I’m better off than that, but the first ½ hour each day is loud, you know the groaning and moaning.  Too bad there’s no one around here but the cats to sympathize.

I was excited when my favorite Master coordinator (the top sales leaders position), had Dr. Frank Painter on his product seminar the other night.  I sent out an announcement and maybe some of you were able to tune in.  I have since listened to the recording and took really good notes which I pass on to you in this post.

Dr. Painter is a major research and practicing chiropractor and maintains the research pages for the Chiro.org online resource for his profession.  It gets thousands of hits a month and is the most go-to site for alternative health care regarding chiropractic treatment.  You can look him up here.

He began with shocking statistics (sometimes I glaze over with too many statistics, but I know professionals quantify results so bear with me.) Chronic pain causes UNBELIEVABLE suffering, disrupts careers and lifestyle, and brings about unimaginable financial drains on our society. It’s now estimated that 24 percent of Americans (or approx. 48 million people) suffer from chronic pain. More than one-third of them regularly take pain medicine to manage their suffering. Those statistics are very frightening.

Pain is caused by tissue injury, surgical procedures, and a variety of illnesses. The common pain we experience from a cut or bruise is very well understood.  It is referred to as acute pain, and is accompanied by the inflammatory response, which involves local swelling, increased temperature, redness, and loss of function.

Damage to cell membranes during an injury releases two substances that initiate the inflammatory response. They are called prostaglandins and bradykinins.  These molecules cause nearby nerve cells to transmit pain information to the brain.  Following the formation of a stable clot, fibroblasts migrate to the site of injury to repair the damaged tissues. That is when acute pain is normally extinguished.  This explains how the acute pain and swelling when I hurt my wrist hiking gradually stopped hurting.  The body rushed repair mechanisms to the place where it was most damaged and in a few hours the acute pain was gone; in a few days all pain was gone.

Chronic pain is differentbecause chronic pain persists.

Dr. Painter focuses on safe supplementation as an alternative to pain medication.  He also talks about our diet and why chronic pain is so much more common.

He reports on a recent study involving hundreds of patients who underwent surgery on their ankle or knee.  The patients who took 1000 mg. of vitamin C for 46 days after their surgery reported 80% reduction in what is called complex regional pain, compared to patients who did not take vitamin C.  If you are planning surgery, especially in a limb (knee or hip replacement for example) begin taking 1000 mg of Sustained Release Vita C before surgery and continue for at least 46 days to prophylactically avoid pain.

Can you believe that more than a 3rd of all people with pain take medication?  When we suffer acute pain from surgery or an injury, the inflammatory response, loss of function, redness and damage to the membrane is alleviated by medication.  And then you stop taking it.  With chronic pain, the wound never heals.  Chronic pain keeps on going.  Any pain that last more than 6 months and has no end in sight, like  arthritis, cancer.

A chiropractor once explained to me that injury sustained in a car wreck creates a pain path in the nervous and muscular system.  The next fender bender is nowhere near as traumatic, but the pain is worse.  This pain path is reactivated, familiar and more challenging to cure.  Believe me, I had a series of car accidents each one less violent than the previous one.  Funny how the pain increased with each one.

How does our diet contribute to chronic pain?

Because of radical changes in the American Diet since the 1950’s, our diet is now pro inflammatory and contributes to both chronic pain and autoimmune system diseases.  I’ll remind you what these changes were:  milling of wheat and other grain to make a ‘whiter’ end product, ie. refining our food; manufacturing foods with high amounts of hydrogenated oils.

Let’s see what’s going on here.  In a plain food diet (no manufacturing), the oils—omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are in equal balance.  Dr Painter points out that there are 49 known essential nutrients—nutrients our body cannot make but must get from food.  These two oils are among them.  They work in concert in the body regulating thousands of functions through the prostaglandin pathways.  I created a link here in case you, like me, are curious about these babies, prostaglandins, which I’ve been hearing about for all these years of studying nutrition’s effect on our body.  Check it out.  Fascinating.

Omega 3 (we eat salmon and buy fish oil for this one) helps the prostaglandins with inflammation, cardio health, allergies, immune response, mylin sheath protection, hormone modulation, and behavior.  Omega 6, found in borage oil, evening primrose oil, initiates the chemical cascade in the inflammatory response to any injury or infection.

Here’s the problem with this duet.  We used to eat a balance of the omegas 3 and 6, short and longer chain fatty acids:  one to one.  Now, with all these refined foods the balance has changed to twenty to one, omega 6 over omega 3.  Think of the Omega 6 as the gas pedal on your car i.e. body, and omega 3 as the breaks.  Omega 6 turns on the inflammatory response.  Omega 3 (fish) turns it off.

The car is headed for the cliff, folks and the break pedal is too weak to stop us from hurtling into a world of pain.

We need both Omega 3 and Omega 6.  We need them in the correct ratio.  Omega 6 comes from hydrogenated oils which are found in virtually all foods.  Removal of the grain coatings (brown rice, wheat), increased sugar consumption (sugar interferes with synthesis of these fatty acids) and the increase in consumption of deep fried foods and margarine prevent with the healthy marriage of the two fatty acids.  The 1:1 synthesis isn’t happening.

What’s the ratio in your life between corn, sunflower and sesame oils (which appear is most processed foods as hydrogenated oils) and cold water fish, sardines, salmon and anchovies?  Too many Omega 6’s = chronic pain.

Impact of chronic pain

People hurt too much to get up and go to work.  We lose $3 billion in income each year because of pain. Stuff doesn’t get done because we hurt too much to do it.  $60 billion a year in lost productivity.  Sixty million of us have arthritis, 1 in 3.  Family members living with someone in chronic pain have to deal with the frustration, anxiety and misery of the suffering person.  How disruptive to family life it is to have all this depression and a sense of helplessness caused by pain!

How do we manage this pain?

Standard medical management:  pain meds, the most popular, aspirin, NSAIDS.  We spend $2.6 billion a year on prescription NSAIDS and another $6 billion on over the counter pain meds.  Most of us are unaware of the lethal side effects of these pain killers. Stanford University reviewed Inflammatory Ruematoid  Arthritis (IRA) drug use in 15,000 patients. Projecting the findings from this well controlled study to the entire US population, they found that 107,000 Reumatoid Arthritis patients were hospitalized for complications from these drugs, a large number of whom never left the hospital alive.  They bleed out before anyone can help them.  16,500 a year die this way.  That’s only the IRA sufferers.  What about everyone else who takes these meds?

You get no warning signs for the stomach trouble that results from taking these medications.  You just bleed to death.

People with osteoarthritis and IRA are more likely than the regular population to be hospitalized because of GI bleeds.  The risk of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS is constant but increases over time with continued use.  The longer you take these drugs, the higher the risk becomes.  Drugs used to coat the stomach do not lower this probability.  The only way to prevent this stomach damage is to stop taking the non steroidal pain medication.  Dying from bleeding to death because of taking too many NSAIDS is the 15th cause of death in America.

By the way, when’s the last time you picked up a bottle of aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen and stopped by the chat with your pharmacist about possible interactions with any other drugs you are taking? No?  You are not alone.  Of all the readers of Consumer Report magazine who answered their survey, only 38% who picked up these drugs when prescribed by their doctor talked to the pharmacist about dangers or interactions.  Only 29% who bought the OTC versions checked with their pharmacist.  We used to be more cautious, before usage became so common.  Eight years ago, Consumer Report did the same survey and over 50% of the people purchasing these medications checked for side effects, dangers and interactions with other medications.  Our pharmacists are trained in drug, supplement and food interactions (not our doctor) and should be used for their expertise.  Avoid risk.

Two neurosurgeons at U of Pittsburg Medical Center decided to explore natural substances to use as a substitute for NSAIDS.  They gave their IRA patients fish oil and after 75 days, 60% of the people had been able to completely discontinue their NSAID usage and were also able to drop off their other pain meds.  88% were extremely satisfied with their pain reduction from taking fish oil.  They would continue to buy fish oil even though it costs more than the medication.

Natural relief

I am going to shamelessly talk about Shaklee’s pain management products.  Dr. Painter is specific about Shaklee as the manufacturer is his presentation.  This company’s large staff of medical scientists studied the problem of prostaglandins and pain, created biochemical models and searched until they found herbs and safe substances that would interrupt the pain path.  I was blown away by the slide presentation Dr. Derrick Wong made at the annual conference the year Pain Relief Complex was introduced.

Pain Relief Complex.  A compliment of medicinal herbs designed to treat pain. The primary ingredient Boswellia extract has been used in India for a long time for joint and arthritic pain as it contains very powerful analgesic properties.  In a study people with severe osteoarthritis knee pain where able to get more flexibility and much less pain with Boswellia extract, and thereby increase their walking distance dramatically.  The frequency of swelling in the knee joint decreased.  Boswellia has also been used to heal the stomach from ulcerative cholitis.  In other words, it helps heal a stomach damaged by Celebrex or other NSAIDS.

Jt. Health Complex.  When in pain we develop pain avoidance behaviors like limping.  Other daily activities are avoided because you know its going to hurt too much to do it.  I know I leave stuff lying on the floor and put off raking leaves because I know I’m going to hurt when I bend over too often.

When we stop moving to avoid pain, we actually increase the likelihood of increased pain.  Why is that? Joint tissue—ligaments, bone, have no blood supply of their own.  They eliminate their waste products through a pumping motion when the joint moves.  Nutrition to the joint also depends on pumping, or moving.  Waste products out, nutrition in through motion.  Without motion, waste products build up around the joint which inhibits the nutrition from being absorbed.  Nutrients move from the high concentration in the blood to diffuse themselves into the joint. This process requires movement.  If your joint is smothered in waste products, the nutrients don’t go there—too crowded—and the cells start to die because there are no nutrients to feed them.  The cartilege begins to degrade and then the bones start to get closer and closer together.  The body tries to stabilize that joint by importing minerals like calcium and magnesium to build extra protection around that joint.  If you took an x-ray of the joint, you’d see little growths where they should not be.  The objective is to reduce the pain so you get more motion in the joint and clear the waste and allow nutrients to enter.  Joint Health Complex provides dramatic and speedy pain relief to get you moving again.

NSAIDS actually accelerate the deterioration of cartilage.  36% of liver failure is being cause by acetaminophen (Tylenol) toxicity.  One out of three liver transplants is because of the use of acetaminophen.  This research and the death of children from Tylenol drove the search for anti-inflammatories with no side effects.

Jt Health Complex leads the way.  Boswellia seratta has a long use as an herbal anti-inflammatory.  It works.  It can be used to treat osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, RA and asthma.  Boswellia was first introduced in Shaklee Pain Relief complex in 2003.  It is so powerful they decided to add it to the Jt. Health Complex.  Joint Health Complex includes as a major ingredient glucosamine.  It has been shown in clinic studies that combining chondroitin with glucosamine reduced the body’s ability to absorb the glucosamine.  In redesigning the Jt. Health Complex, Shaklee scientists made sure there was no chondroitin mixed in with it.

Testing

Once they had the new formulation completed, they tested it head to head with the leading pharmacist recommended product, Walgreen’s Osteobyflex.  In a clinical trial they found that Jt. Health Complex was 28% faster acting than byflex for providing pain relief.  If you were beginning for the first time to take the product, it took only 5 days to get relief with Jt. Health Complex as opposed to 7 days with Osteobyflex.  With the addition of boswellia,  Jt. Health complex gave 45% better pain relief than the Walgreen product.  Shaklee found a vegetarian source for glucosamine.  Most glucosamine on the market is sourced from shell fish.  They also made use of a carrier molecule that does not have salt (some products on the market are as much as 30% salt!) which, if you had high blood pressure could be bad—1 third of a tablespoon of salt? I don’t think so. Jt. Health Complex uses hydrochloric acid instead of sulfate to deliver glucosamine.  It also contains zinc, manganese, copper and Vita C to nourish the developing cartelig.  Glucosamine has been researched extensively since 1970’s and has been found to be at least as effective in relieving pain and NSAIDs without any dangerous side effects.  In one study it was shown that there was an actual increase in the catarlege with glucosamine.

Joint and muscle pain cream.  Helps with pain from over use during exercise.  Active ingredient is menthol. Shaklee improved on the healing characteristics by improving on the delivery of the menthol with a liposome delivery system.  This liposome delivery provides prolonged release and deeper penetration.  If you’ve used Flexall 454, Icy Hot and JointFlex, your may get temporary distraction from pain, but you are probably throwing your money away.  Topical local anesthetics, topical capsaicin are basically aspirin in creamy form and could affect your stomach just the way taking aspirin does.

I strongly recommend this trio of pain relief products for chronic pain.  I use them to great advantage.  Dr. Painter provides the scientific back drop to prove the effect is no placebo.

If you suffer from chronic pain that does not seem to associated with a joint, Omega guard is the #1 nutrient solution.  Shaklee’s OmegaGuard, DHA, EPA and 5 other naturally found omega 3 fatty acids provides the missing link for halting diet induced inflammation.  Get the balance back between omega 6 and omega 3, supplement with Omerga 3 so the ratio is 1:1 and you will have less pain.  OmegaGuard naturally balance the prostyglandins that prolong the inflammatory response to pain stimulus.  Rather than using drugs to suppress the inflammation, re-balance the body’s own ability to handle pain by changing your diet to eliminate hydrogenated fats and excess sugars plus taking enough OmegaGuard to change the 3:6 dance back to 1:1.

? A cup of green tea contains about 15 to 30 mg of caffeine, yet because green tea
also contains Theanine (an amino acid that calms) it counteracts the effects of
caffeine
? Aids in the detoxification of heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.)

Active Ingredients include:
? Polyphenols – a class of phytochemicals found in high concentrations in green
tea, and has been associated with heart disease and cancer prevention. One cup
of green tea provides 10-40 mg of polyphenols and has antioxidant effects greater
than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots, or strawberries.
? Catechins – are a category of polyphenols that work to scavenge active oxygen
species in the blood and help protect the body from harmful microorganisms
? One specific catechin is known as EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) – which
reduces inflammation in many types of conditions, including Crohn’s disease and
arthritis. It has antioxidant activity about 25 to 100 times more potent than
vitamins C & E.
? Theanine – an amino acid that produces tranquilizing effects in the brain (3 to 4
cups of green tea are expected to contain 100 to 200 mg of Theanine)
? Saponin – Natural inflammatory agents
? Flavonoids – Substances essential for processing vitamin C and for maintaining
the strength of the capillary walls.

White Tea
The least processed form of tea made from buds and young leaves. Has more antimutagenic (anti-cancer) activity than green tea (highly recommended to reduce the risk of colon cancer). Contains high concentrations of Catechins including EGCG.

Matcha Green Tea Powder
? Matcha contains 10 to 200 times the antioxidant levels of normal green tea (this is a greener than green super food)
? It contains 9x the beta-carotene of spinach and 4x the beta carotene of carrots

? Containing exotic white, red and Matcha green teas
? Makes an extraordinary drink
? Is a safe, natural, healthy, and effective alternative for boosting energy
? Only 5 calories per serving
? Great in hot or iced water

Red, white, green & Matcha teas are ranked as leading health-giving substances in
traditional Chinese medicine. They have been known for centuries to have many
positive properties:
? Anti-microbial
? Immunostimulatory
? Anti-carcinogenic
? Anti-inflammatory
? Protective against cardiovascular disease
? Detoxifiers
? Energy & fat loss stimulators

Now you can see why the European Asian culture was forward thinking in their health care!

Reports affirming the Benefits of Red, Green, White and Matcha teas:
? WebMD Medical News, March 11, 2003– Green Tea & White Tea Fight Colon
Cancer – drink 3 cups a day for cancer-prevention benefits. Antioxidants and
polyphenols – cancer prevention compounds – are found in highest levels in white
tea, which is the least processed of all teas, writes lead author Gayle A. Orner,
PhD, a researcher with the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Her
study of tea protective effects against colon cancer appears in the February 2003
issue of Carcinogenesis.
? American Cancer Society- those who regularly drink green tea are 48% less likely to develop stomach cancer, and 51% less likely to develop chronic gastritis than those who do not regularly drink green tea.
? Boston University Schools of Medicine & Public Health – Drinking green tea may help protect women from getting breast cancer.
? National Library of Medicine – consumption of green tea may be prophylactic for arthritis and may benefit the arthritis patient by reducing inflammation and slowing cartilage breakdown.
? Clinical Cancer Research, University of California, Los Angeles (Feb. 15, 2005
issue)– Green tea thwarts cancer and many of green tea components work
synergistically to protect us.
? Science Daily – Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that a component in
green tea helps kill cells of the most common leukemia in the United States. CLL
(Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) is a malignant blood disease that afflicts about
7,000 Americans per year and kills 4,500. But now scientists at the Mayo Clinic
have found a way of killing CLL cells in the test tube that could potentially be
developed into a treatment for CLL, and possibly other cancers in living humans.
The agent in question is called epigallocatechin (EGCG). It is an antioxidant that
is found in both black and green tea, but more abundantly in the unfermented
green variety. The anticancer activity of green tea has been known for years.
Scientists have identified at least one of the mechanisms by which EGCG seems
to work to fight cancer it inhibits a key signaling pathway, called vascular
endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is responsible for transmitting instructions at the molecular level to cancer cells, prompting them to grow and multiply.

? Fujiki, 120, 128, 129– Green tea is an acknowledged cancer preventative in
Japan. It is possible that the Catechins, particularly EGCG, inhibit the initiation
and promotion phases of cancer development by preventing free radical damage
to DNA. They have a wide range of target organs, such as the digestive tract
including esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colon, plus liver, lung, pancreas,
and skin. Recently breast, bladder and prostate have been added to the list. This
wide range of target organs makes green teas significantly different from standard
cancer preventative drugs. Green tea has inhibitory effects on growth of cancer
cells. The tea has also been shown effective in helping prevent recurrence.

? American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, November 1999 – Green tea increases
noradrenaline levels. Noradrenaline is a chemical neurotransmitter in the nervous
system that plays a major role in activation of brown fat tissue. Activation of
brown fat is significant, because it burns calories from the white fat located around
our waistline, hips and thighs.

? WebMD Medical News January 26, 2003– Catechins in green tea not only help
burn calories, but also they lower LDL cholesterol.
